Itinerary:
Arrival Day
Arrival at Iceland Bike Farm from 18.00 and welcoming dinner at your accommodation in Grjóthóll Glamping. Grjóthóll means Rocky hill and is basically located in the middle of nowhere. Glamping, also known as glamorous camping, is where you will spend your time the next two nights, in a spacious Tipi tent with comfortable beds and cozy decoration. Hot water showers and restrooms are only few steps away from the tents. Right next to the tents is an old barn and sheep house, renovated to a glampers chill and dine area. After dinner it is perfect to go for a walk and enjoy the bright summer night.
Day 1: Bike & Cave
After waking up with the sounds of the birds and enjoying a wholesome breakfast you should be ready to head out for your day´s adventure. We start with an exciting super jeep journey up into the Highlands, with expansive views towards Vatnajökull icecap and traveling through the second largest lava flow in history of Iceland, the Laki lava's.
After few viewing stops along the way, we eventually arrive at the entrance to the biggest volcanic cave system in Europe, only recently discovered, created during the fissure line eruption of Laki volcano and craters in 1783-84.
There we will gear-up with helmet and a headlight and some warm clothing before we enter the caves and take an exhilarating subterranean adventure of exploration. The colors, forms and features to be seen within the caves are mesmerizing, not only because of their natural beauty but also because of the volcanic processes that created them; all will be described and explained by your guide.
After a refreshing cave mission, and having eaten a tasty picnic lunch, we will prepare ourselves for the bike ride. This will take us alongside the enormous lava flow of Laki, covered with thick and spongy moss, sometimes bright green colored especially after a rain shower. The ride goes for about 20 km, mainly downhill on a smooth gravel road with very little traffic expected or none at all.
After the bike ride we head back to our home, Grjóthóll Glamping, where we will relax and enjoy a local dinner, share some stories and perhaps play some local mountain games before sweet dreaming in your tent.
Day 2: Skaftafell National Park & Jökulsárlón SUP-Boarding
Today we will visit Vatnajökull National Park and start with a 2 hour hike in Skaftafell. There we get a fantastic view over the contrasting glaciers, black sands, green birch forest and Svartifoss, the waterfall surrounded with black basaltic columns. The rugged landscapes, mountains and glaciers, the flora and the fauna often have a magnetic influence on the visitors.
After a motivated walk we head further east to the famous Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, which is a must-do when you are in this part of Iceland. Jökulsárlón is a large glacial lake at the edge of Breiðamerkurjökull glacier and has formed after the glacier started receding from the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. The lake has grown since then at varying rates because of melting of the glaciers and is now the deepest lake in Iceland.
At Jökulsárlón we will step into the arctic environment and discover the amazing glacier lagoon up close and personal on a SUP board. SUP board means Stand Up Paddle board and is what it means- a board you stand on and paddle.
In the company of qualified guides you get close to floating ice sculptures of the lagoon, its wild life, the geology and history of the elements that have shaped the country throughout the centuries. A once in a lifetime experience you will never forget.
All good things have to come to an end, and after two amazing adventure days, it is time to say goodbye. In the afternoon we head back to Iceland Bike Farm or make sure you get to your next destination.
We Are Looking Forward Riding With You!
